Family, Faith & Farmstead: Meet Mamas Kitchen & Always Faithful Farmstead

At The Barn & Basket Market, every product has a story, and behind the jams, jellies, salsas, tinctures and farmstead goods from Mamas Kitchen & Always Faithful Farmstead is a family committed to faith, hard work and making good products with care.

Located in Oakwood, Texas, Mamas Kitchen & Always Faithful Farmstead is owned and operated by Kristy Hooker and her family. Their business officially began selling to the public about five years ago, but its roots had been growing long before that.

“It wasn’t really something that started with a business plan,” Kristy shared. “It started with our family, our love of growing food, making things from scratch, learning old-fashioned skills and wanting to provide our family with good, wholesome products.”

Over time, other people began asking to purchase the things they were already growing, making and preserving for their own family. What began small gradually became a meaningful family business that continues to grow today.

A Business Rooted in Family and Faith

The two parts of the business name tell the story of who this family is.

Mamas Kitchen represents homemade food, family, gathering around the table and passing down old-fashioned skills. It is the heart of so much of what Kristy creates.

Always Faithful Farmstead represents their faith, family and commitment to remaining faithful, even when the work is difficult, slow or must be done the harder way. “Always Faithful” also reflects Semper Fi, a meaningful connection for their proud Marine Corps family.

Together, the name represents the values by which they try to live: faith, family, hard work and faithfully stewarding what they have been entrusted with.

Kristy and her husband, Jeremy, run the business together, and their children are an important part of it. Depending on the season, the children may help in the garden, harvest and wash produce, prepare and package products, assist at the farmers market or lend a hand wherever the work is piling up...and this often goes beyond just their own farm and home.

For Kristy, this family involvement is about more than getting the work done. She wants her children to understand that food does not simply appear on a grocery store shelf. It takes work, patience and love to grow and produce it.

From a Tiny Seed to a Finished Product

The Hooker family loves the old-fashioned process of growing food, preserving the harvest, making things from scratch and using what the land provides.

“There is something incredibly satisfying about planting a tiny seed, watching it grow, harvesting it and then turning it into something that can feed or bless another family,” Kristy said.

That commitment can be seen in everything they offer. They grow their produce without pesticides...not even organic pesticides...and focus instead on healthy soil, regenerative practices and creating an environment in which their plants can thrive naturally.

In the kitchen, they choose organic ingredients whenever possible and focus on simple, recognizable ingredients. They do not make or sell products they would not personally use or proudly serve to their own family. The finished jar or bottle is only the final step in a much longer process. A farm product may begin with preparing the soil, planting, watering and tending before it can ever be harvested. A kitchen product may involve growing, washing and preparing the produce, followed by cooking, preserving, bottling, labeling and packaging. Their tinctures and herbal products begin with carefully selected plants, many grown on their own farm, and an extraction process that cannot be rushed. Then there is everything customers rarely see: washing jars, making labels, keeping records, filling orders, cleaning, delivering products and preparing for the next market.

A Little Bit of Everything

Mamas Kitchen & Always Faithful Farmstead offers an incredible variety of products at The Barn & Basket Market, including:

  • Homemade jams and jellies

  • Salsas in a range of heat levels

  • Tinctures and herbal extracts

  • Baking extracts and vanilla products

  • Seasonings and flavored salts

  • Candied pecans

  • Fresh microgreens and microgreen products

  • Fresh-pressed juices and lemonades

  • Seasonal farmstead goods

Their selection changes throughout the year because they are always growing, learning and creating something new. If Kristy had to choose a favorite, it would probably be the salsa. The family enjoys experimenting with different peppers and heat levels, offering everything from no-heat varieties to salsas made for serious heat lovers. Their hottest salsa earned first place for Best Hottest Salsa at the Palestine Hot Pepper Festival in both 2024 and 2025. Their jams, jellies, salsas, tinctures and herbal products are among their best sellers at The Barn & Basket, but Kristy wishes more people knew about their microgreen products.

Microgreens are far more than a pretty garnish. They are nutrient-dense and easy to add to salads, sandwiches, eggs, soups and other savory dishes. Mamas Kitchen also turns them into microgreen salt and microgreen powder, giving customers a simple way to add extra flavor and nutrition to everyday meals.

Their products are meant to be used and enjoyed. Jams and jellies are wonderful on toast, biscuits and sourdough, added to cheese boards or used in cooking and baking. Pepper jelly pairs beautifully with cream cheese and crackers. Salsa can be served with chips or spooned over eggs, tacos and grilled meats, while their seasonings and flavored salts can make everyday cooking a little more fun.

The Heart Behind Every Jar

Kristy’s favorite part of owning the business is the people. She loves meeting customers, hearing what they are cooking and discovering which products have become family favorites. She also loves creating something with her own hands and watching someone else enjoy it.

Most of all, she values the example the business gives her children. They are learning lessons that cannot always be taught in a textbook: responsibility, entrepreneurship, customer service, perseverance and the value of creating something from nothing.

The most difficult part is trying to do everything. In a small family business, there are no separate departments for farming, production, cleaning, packaging, bookkeeping, marketing, deliveries, customer service and sales. Sometimes one person handles all of them in the same day.

Farming is unpredictable, and balancing a business with family life brings its own challenges. Their approach is simple: take it one day at a time and keep moving forward.

Kristy hopes customers feel the care behind each purchase.

“There is a real family behind the product,” she said. “There are real hands that planted the seed, harvested the pepper, stirred the pot, filled the jar and put the label on it.”

Why Supporting Local Matters

When you purchase from a local farmer or maker, your money does more than pay for a product. It supports a family, a dream and the ability to continue doing meaningful work.

Small businesses also help make a community feel like a community. Shopping locally keeps valuable skills and traditions alive while giving customers access to foods and products they may not find in a conventional grocery store.

Being a vendor at The Barn & Basket Market allows Mamas Kitchen & Always Faithful Farmstead to serve customers throughout the week, not only on a Saturday at the Palestine Farmers Market. It has also helped them reach families who may not otherwise have discovered their products.

For Kristy, one of the greatest rewards has been helping bring good-quality food and health products to a community that might not otherwise have easy access to them. Seeing people gain the opportunity to make better choices is at the heart of why her family does this work.

Looking Ahead

There is always something new growing, extracting or simmering at Mamas Kitchen & Always Faithful Farmstead. The family continually experiments with new jam and jelly combinations, seasonal items, tinctures, herbal extracts, seasonings and microgreen products. Their much-loved Christmas jam will be returning to the shelves soon, along with several new tinctures Kristy personally uses and is especially excited to share.

An even bigger milestone is ahead: by the end of the year, Kristy and her husband plan to work in the business together full-time. Their goal is to continue growing while remaining true to who they are and, one day, possibly pass what they have built on to their children.

If Kristy had to describe their business in three words, they would be:

Family. Faith. Farmstead.

Those words can be felt in everything they do.

The next time you pick up a jar of salsa, a bottle of tincture, a package of microgreens or one of their seasonal creations at The Barn & Basket, remember that you are bringing home more than a product. You are supporting a real family, a local farm, a dream and a tremendous amount of hard work.

Kristy and her family are grateful for every purchase, shared post, market visit and word of encouragement that helps their small business continue to grow...and they are just getting started.
